Why Travel Insurance Matters

Travel insurance gives you protection for things like emergency medical treatment, lost luggage, trip cancellation, and evacuation. We help you pick the right level of coverage so you can travel with confidence.

Travel Medical & Evacuation
Travel Medical & Evacuation helps cover medical emergencies abroad, hospitalizations, and emergency transport to a better facility or home. If your regular health insurance doesn’t cover you abroad—or if you’re traveling to remote areas—this type of coverage is essential.
What is medical evacuation and when is it needed?
Medical evacuation (or “medevac”) is when you need to be transported due to serious illness or injury—often by air ambulance or specialized transport—to an adequate medical facility, or even back home if necessary. It’s needed when local care isn’t sufficient.
Are pre-existing conditions covered?
It depends on the policy. Some travel medical plans offer a pre-existing conditions waiver if you buy the insurance soon after making your trip deposit. Without that waiver, medical issues you had before your trip may not be covered.
How much coverage is “enough” for medical emergencies?
Because medical evacuation costs can be extremely high (especially overseas or from remote destinations), many travelers choose plans with at least $100,000 in emergency medical and evacuation coverage; some select much higher limits.

Trip Cancellation, Interruption & Delay
This type protects your prepaid, nonrefundable travel expenses if you need to cancel or cut short your trip for covered reasons (e.g. illness, severe weather, or unexpected events), or if your travel is delayed. Also helps reimburse extra costs for travel delays (hotel, meals).
What qualifies as a “covered reason” to cancel or interrupt a trip?
Covered reasons vary by insurance policy, but common ones include sudden illness or injury, death of a family member, natural disasters, airline strikes or closures. Always check your policy’s list, because some things (like known events, epidemics, or fear of travel) may be excluded.
Do I need trip cancellation coverage if I’m already paying for flights & hotels?
Yes, if those plans are nonrefundable—if you cancel for a covered reason, trip cancellation coverage can reimburse those nonrefundable costs. Without this, you risk losing all that prepaid money.
When should I buy this coverage?
As soon as you make your first nonrefundable payment or deposit. Buying early often lets you add critical coverages, like “cancel for any reason” or waivers for pre-existing conditions.
Baggage, Personal Belongings, & Delay Protection
Covers loss, theft, or damage of luggage and personal items. Delay protection offers reimbursement for essentials (meals, lodging) when travel interruptions occur. Useful when flights are delayed, baggage is delayed, or items are lost in transit.
What happens if my luggage is delayed for a few hours or lost completely?
If delayed, you can typically get reimbursed for essential purchases (toiletries, clothing). If lost or stolen, the policy may pay up to a stated maximum for replacement, depending on your coverage limit.
Are electronics and high-value items covered?
Some policies include coverage for personal effects with sub-limits for higher-value items (cameras, laptops). Others exclude them or require you to declare values or purchase add-ons.
How do I prove lost or damaged items?
You’ll usually need receipts, photos, baggage tags, and sometimes a report from the airline or local authorities. Filing quickly helps.

General Travel Insurance FAQs
What is “Cancel for Any Reason” (CFAR)?
A policy add-on that lets you cancel your trip for reasons beyond what the basic plan covers—usually reimburses only a percentage of your prepaid nonrefundable expenses and must be purchased soon after booking.
Will my regular health insurance or Medicare cover me abroad?
Usually not. Many domestic and Medicare plans don’t cover medical emergencies outside the U.S., or they limit coverage dramatically. Travel insurance fills those gaps.
How much does travel insurance cost?
Typically, travel insurance costs 4%-10% of your total trip cost depending on destination, trip length, traveler’s age, and how much premade nonrefundable expense you have.
Can I buy travel insurance after I’ve booked my trip?
Yes, but waiting too long may prevent you from adding certain useful features (like pre-existing condition waiver or CFAR). Also, some “covered reasons” require the policy to be in force before certain events occur.
What is medical evacuation coverage?
This benefit covers transport of sick or injured travelers from remote or resource-poor areas to an adequate medical facility—sometimes even back to their home country. It can cost a lot without insurance.
